LINE: The Spider is a film set in Spain; an odd place of old world architecture
and ultra modern blended and this story tells of humorous anarchy against the
established Catholic tradition by an eclectic group of friends.
SYNOPSIS: Juan a Barcelona artist paints skulls in
bright colors for the day of the dead celebration in town. He lives
harmoniously with his wife Ines and young daughter Fedora. Events all the way from
Bilbo call them to join the change percolating in a place where striking modern
architecture is erected sharply contrasting Spain’s traditional past. Isabel
and Cortez two wealthy business executives who work for his father take a break
from the business world of family tradition and escape to a new apartment and
Isabel resurrects her love of stain glass art work. Isabel meets Erida an ex priest
who hid as a man in seminary school and decides to quit finally and embark on a
project with Isabel; Casa de la Arana Santo or House of the Holy Spider. This is
to be a concert hall with new art work by Isabel and remodelling.
Maurice
a Priest in a large Cathedral in town is tormented By Erida and Isabel’s
practical jokes to help him leave his post; a bull is put into the cathedral
for opening morning with a dummy of a priest killed by a lance. His own destiny
follows suit as a demented exorcism nearly goes wrong and he escapes unscathed
followed by more hilarious tribulations at the cathedral that prove to become
constant irritations to the quiet, intensely focused Maurice.
Meanwhile
Isabel has great progress wither murals of the story of the Arana Santo in preparation
for the opening of the new concert hall in the renovated and gutted old church
now renamed with pews ripped out and replaced by concert theatre seats.
Erida
enjoys a new lover and a new life away from the church and meets Maurice who
she had an infatuation with in seminary school when he lectured to her class several
times. A romantic tension exists between the two characters that builds through
the story.
The culmination
of work results in a magical building created to house concerts that will illustrate
the spider within in a deeper understanding that there is no god outside the
self no preacher no sermons it is all inside revealed to the attendees by a glorious
experience planned for them.
Juan and
Ines visit Bilbo for a holiday and he gets an art exhibit with the modern art
center making his dream come true of more prominent exposure in the art world.
Maurice
spends time on his sabbatical from church at his sister’s the bee keeper. He
finds himself happy with the prospect of helping her run the business after her
divorce from her husband left her with it. Maurice and Erida spend time together and she
leaves Paulo her lover after he flirts with a model. Maurice decides to resign
from the church and leaves his subordinate to run it. Rodriguez has his own challenges
with it with a stigmata occurring in the congregation and a flood of broken
pipes in the church leading him to take sick leave.
Success
is found in the grand opening of the Casa de la Arana Santo and people gather
from all over some who had strange experiences with spiders.
Maurice
and Erida witness the final fate of the cathedral and find themselves in a new
life together.
